Book Launch: ‘Cloch in Áit an Charnáin: Seán Ó hEochaidh, Bailitheoir Béaloidis’ le Pádraig Ó Tiarnaigh. Foreward by Professor Lillis Ó Laoire. Published by Éabhlóid.

Joined in song by Gearóid Ó Deoráin & in discussion with the Éabhlóid editorial team.

Over a period of more than fifty years, Ó hEochaidh travelled the winding roads and backroads of the Tír Chonaill Gaeltacht, collecting stories, songs, and folklore that had been handed down from generation to generation by the local people over centuries. He preserved a significant portion of that cultural wealth for us before it would be lost forever. Following many years of careful study of Ó hEochaidh’s diaries, Pádraig Ó Tiarnaigh presents a penetrating assessment of the collector’s legacy, highlighting not only the valuable material he gathered but also the cultural context and the way of life that was fading away during his time. He offers fresh insight into the relationship between Ó hEochaidh and his employer, the Irish Folklore Commission, and his superior, Director Séamus Ó Duilearga, analyzing a complex relationship that spanned half a century. Join Pádraig to retrace his 15 years of language and archive research in compiling this book. He will be joined by his close friend and former Principle of Coláiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne, Teelin, Géaroid Ó Deoráin, who will sing a few songs closely associated with the Teelin Gaeltacht. The event will feature a discussion with the author and the Éabhlóid editorial team. Thanks to An tOireachtas and Éabhlóid for their support for this event.
